The Road to Net Zero

See much time we have left - The Climate Clock

The Climate Clock shows two numbers. The first, in red, is a timer, counting down how long it will take, at current rates of emissions, to burn through our “carbon budget” — the amount of CO2 that can still be released into the atmosphere while limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. This is our deadline, the time we have left to take decisive action to keep warming under the 1.5°C threshold. The second number, in green, is tracking the growing % of the world’s energy currently supplied from renewable sources. This is our lifeline. Simply put, we need to get our lifeline to 100% before our deadline reaches 0. For more details Climate Clock - The Science

Committee for Climate Change, 6th Carbon Budget

The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) advises the government on emissions targets and reports to Parliament on progress made in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. They have produced a number of Carbon Budgets, mapping a route to Net Zero emissions for the UK by 2050.

CCC is an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

“Our recommended pathway requires a

78% reduction in UK territorial emissions between 1990 and 2035.

In effect, bringing forward the UK’s previous 80% target by nearly 15 years.”
